ChatGPT can now work with Apple Messages on Mac, allowing users to read and search
iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations and prepare or send messages.

The convenience is easy to understand.

But before connecting years of conversations, there is another question worth asking:
how much access are you comfortable giving an AI assistant?

Messages Contain More Than Casual Conversations

Most people probably do not think of their text-message history as a database.

But look through a typical Messages inbox and you may find conversations with family,
friends, customers, coworkers, banks, healthcare providers, service companies, appointment
reminders, verification codes, links to private accounts and plenty of spam.

That matters because permission to access Messages is not simply about the messages
you plan to ask ChatGPT about.

It is also about understanding the scope of the information the integration may be able
to access once permission is granted.

What Does ChatGPT’s Apple Messages Integration Do?

According to OpenAI, the Apple Messages plugin for the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS
can read and search conversations and help prepare or send messages.

By default, ChatGPT asks the user to approve the message and its recipients before
sending.

Those controls are important, but they do not answer every practical question a user
may have about access.

Can You Limit ChatGPT to Certain Messages?

This is where the feature becomes especially interesting for people who use the same
device for both personal and business communication.

For example, someone may have a personal phone number and a second line used primarily
for business.

They may want AI assistance with business messages without giving the same level of
access to personal conversations.

At the time of publication, I have not found clear documentation showing that users can
limit Apple Messages access by individual SIM, phone line, contact, or conversation.

That does not mean those controls will never exist. The feature is new, and like most
major software releases, it will likely evolve through updates, fixes, and user feedback.

Your Messages Also Contain Other People’s Information

There is another part of this discussion that deserves attention.

A text-message history does not contain only your information.

Other people have sent information to you, sometimes in contexts that may be personal,
financial, professional, or sensitive.

A bank manager may text you. A healthcare provider may send an appointment reminder
or a link to a visit summary. A customer may send business information. A family member
may share something private.

The fact that the account or device belongs to you does not mean every piece of information
inside the conversation originated with you.

Permission and Scope Are Not the Same Thing

When users click Allow, they may be thinking about the task they want AI
to perform.

They may not be thinking about the full scope of information associated with that permission.

That is why it helps to separate three ideas:

  • Permission: What access did the user authorize?
  • Scope: What information can the integration access under that permission?
  • Use: What information is actually retrieved or used for a specific request?

Those are related, but they are not necessarily the same.

Spam Is an Interesting Test Case

One potentially useful application is spam detection.

Anyone who receives a steady stream of suspicious texts knows that traditional spam
filtering is far from perfect.

An AI assistant may eventually be able to evaluate more context when helping identify
unwanted messages.

But that creates the same governance question again:
how much context does the system need in order to decide what is spam?

More context may produce better assistance. More context also increases the importance
of understanding access boundaries.

A Governance-First Approach to Connected AI

This is not an argument against connected AI.

The ability to search conversations, locate information, draft responses and reduce
communication overload could be extremely useful.

But usefulness should not eliminate the need for thoughtful adoption.

Before connecting an established communication history, businesses and individuals
should understand what the integration can access, what controls are available and
whether the level of access makes sense for the task.

Start Smaller When You Can

Email offers one relatively simple way to test connected AI without immediately exposing
years of existing communications.

My recommendation is to begin with a new email account that contains no personal,
customer, financial, healthcare or other sensitive information.

Populate it with representative test messages and learn how the system behaves.

  • Ask it to find an email.
  • Have it summarize a conversation.
  • Test drafting a response.
  • Send obvious spam and see how it handles it.
  • Review the permissions before expanding access.

A test environment does not solve every privacy or governance question, but it creates
a safer place to understand the technology before connecting a real inbox.

New Features Will Continue to Evolve

This capability was introduced only recently.

Like most new technology releases, there will likely be updates, bug fixes, usability
changes, and additional controls as people begin using it in real-world situations.

The goal should not be to demand that every new AI feature arrive perfectly formed.

The goal is to make sure that control evolves alongside capability.

The Bottom Line

AI assistants are becoming increasingly connected to the tools we use every day.
That can make them far more useful.

It can also give them access to information most users previously considered separate
from an AI conversation.

Before connecting years of messages or email, understand the permission, understand
the scope, and decide whether the access is appropriate for what you actually want
the technology to do.

Innovation does not have to slow down.

But access does not have to expand faster than our ability to govern it.
